This course explores ways that artists have worked their art practice into domains of public space, from landscape to monuments to mass media. We will pay careful attention to artists who have worked not only at different locations, but at dramatically different scales and durations than most. We will place a strong emphasis on getting outside the classroom and connecting our artistic knowledge with what we can observe and experience. We will work on our ability to read and respond to context-political, social, and environmental-an essential skill for artists in communicating about their own work.
