This course engages with the history of Latin American art as a background to its focus on Modern and Contemporary expressions of such. It considers, primarily, Modernism in Latin America in its various incarnations beginning in the nineteenth century, as well as Contemporary art-making in the region until the present. It addresses the historical, cultural and political contexts that gave rise to Modernism in Latin America, as well as the relationships of those Latin American movements and artists to Modernist and political movements around the world. The lectures and content are designed to activate themes of Modernism, post-Modernism, post-colonialism, politics and migration as organizing paradigms that run throughout. The course will take a lecture and discussion format on a weekly basis, with some class meetings taking place within museum and gallery spaces, bringing students into direct concert with relevant objects and artworks.
