This course would trace art and slavery's coeval relationship as well as how artists have participated in, interpreted, and responded to the institution of slavery. Potential topics would include: Copley's portrait sitters and their relationship to slavery, printmaking's role in perpetuating slavery and its role in abolition efforts, enslaved artists, the visual culture of cotton, and contemporary works by artists like Kara walker, Glenn Ligon, and Cameron Rowland.
