How can we learn Fashion History through pieces of material culture? Or conversely, what can objects of material culture teach us about Fashion History? In this First Year Seminar course students will learn to analyze diverse objects of material culture, including items of dress, as well as illustrations and paintings, statues, furniture, and architecture in order to form a foundational understanding of Fashion History from as early as pre-history to the present day. Each class session is centered around a specific historical era or theme, and consists of a reading-based discussion in conjunction with several material culture-based analyses of works of art and objects that support critical thinking around the session's key points.
