Digital fashion- garments and accessories created digitally for use on a digital platform -is a relatively new segment of the fashion system, which has been heralded as an innovative solution to numerous issues around social and environmental sustainability. In an exploration of the history and theory of this multifaceted genre, students in this course will consider questions such as: Is digital fashion art, entertainment, sartorial expression, or all of the above and more? What are the various types of digital fashion, and how are they changing with new technologies, such as NFTs and Blockchain? Does digital fashion provide safety and privacy for marginalized groups? Can digital fashion mitigate or solve waste and pollution generated by fast fashion? To find answers, students will explore case studies that range from video games like The Sims, NFTs such as The Fabricant's famous Iridescence dress, sustainability reports, as well as guest lectures from practitioners and industry leaders.
