Originality involves fashioning new things out of old materials. In this free-ranging seminar, we'll explore how the idea of transformation (metamorphosis) is variously embedded in our understanding of creativity, from the visual (shape-shifting) to the literary (translation, parody, burlesque), philosophical (atomism), dramatic (adaptation in film/tv), auditory (sampling, theme and variations), legal (“transformative use”), and beyond.
